Obstacle Training Challenge

Obstacle races are intense, fun, multidisciplinary events that really call out the best in you.

I’ve done about a dozen of these events, ranging from short 5k obstacle races to the mother of all, the Spartan Championship Beast (which I’ve done four times).

No matter what stage you are at, I can help you get ready or improve for your next event.

Ok, I Know What These Are – How Can Darrin Help Me?

I offer a complete training plan including program design and hands-on personal training (more like group training) in Vermont.  The specifics will be based on the participants – We are forming groups now, for the 2015 season.

In general, here’s what you can expect:

  • Assessment of where you are and where you need to improve.
  • A full 8 or 12 week program written out for you.  This will be based on where your capabilities are, what your goals are, what equipment you have access to outside of class, etc.
  • A mixture of training on your own and with the group at my facility in Thetford, VT.  To get ready for your event, you’ll need to train several days a week.
  • Tough-Mudder-Climb

    Running up mud hills is par for the course in obstacle races.

    Overall strength development.  With a variety of techniques, including bodyweight training, weight lifting, and odd implements, we WILL get you stronger.

  • Technique and Form.  I am adamant that you learn proper form even while pushing yourself hard.
  • Overall running development.  How to safely increase your distance and/or pace.
  • Nutrition strategies.
  • Skill development, including
    • rope climbing
    • monkey bars
    • hills (up and down each require different skills)
    • sandbag carries
    • spear throws
    • much more
  • Outside experts.  I’m not an expert in everything.  Based on the needs of the group, I may bring in someone with more running experience or other skill to help you and others progress.

But I’m Not Interested In Doing an Event – Why Should I Join The Training?

Even if you don’t want to do an event, training for an obstacle race will provide a great platform for getting stronger and shedding fat.  You’ll be part of a group who trains with a purpose, which will be fun and motivating!  Who knows, after training for a Spartan, maybe you’ll decide to do one.  If not, you’ll still be in great shape after 8 to 12 weeks of this.  Of course, if you really don’t want to do the extras that are specific for obstacle courses, check out the Group Metabolic Training, which is very similar and overlaps with these sessions.

When/How Often?

The exact schedule changes based on the number of participants and the time of year.  For each “season”, I determine the times that fits everyone as best as possible.  Once set, you’ll want to attend 2 or 3 times a week, and then add 2 or 3 extra sessions on your own.  Each session will last about an hour.  Once in a while we’ll have longer practice sessions.

There will be times when we have to shift schedules because of my vacation, competitions I’m in, etc.

How Much Will This Cost?

The cost for this is just $35 a week.  Because of the amount of upfront effort I’ll put into assessing you, working with you on your goals, added skill development specific to Obstacle Course prep, and tweaking the program for you, I’ll also ask for one additional week up front – think of that as a set up fee but it’s not some dumb administrative fee.  It’s really a valuable part of the experience for you.

Can You Guarantee Me That I Will Win My Age Group At the Spartan?

Of course I can’t guarantee any particular person anything.  But if you aren’t happy with how things are going, and you aren’t getting stronger and leaner with more endurance, then I’ll refund your balance.   I don’t want to be paid if you aren’t happy with the results you’re getting.

Why Darrin?

This is the part where I tell you all my credentials and brag about myself winning the World’s Greatest Mudder.  Well, I didn’t and so I’m not going to take that angle.  The real reasons you should consider doing this with me are

  1. Experience with the events (I’ve done over a dozen of these in 6 states).  I’ve also competed in Olympic Weightlifting, powerlifting, and various running events.
  2. Certified with the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
  3. I’m not a champion.  Yeah, that’s actually a good thing here – I’m not superhuman and chances are you aren’t either.  Which means I’ve had to develop good practices to overcome pretty mediocre genetics.  I can share these.
  4. I’m local.  If you are near Thetford, Vermont, this is convenient.
  5. Affordable.  I don’t know anywhere you can get this level of training at this price.
  6. Be part of a group.  Even if you don’t want to do an actual event, you’ll be part of a group that motivates each other.
  7. The right amount of pressure.  I’m going to push you but not beyond your own goals.  We’ll work on your goals up front and THAT is what we’ll work towards.
